Residents and visitors in Wyre now have more places to refill reusable water bottles, after the borough council announced a network of five public refill fountains. The update, published on 16 October 2026, is part of an effort to improve access to free drinking water and reduce reliance on single-use plastic bottles.

Wyre Council says the fountains have been supported by funding from the Sea Changers Coastal Fountain Fund alongside direct council investment. The locations cover popular coastal, town-centre and outdoor destinations across the borough.

Where are the five refill fountains?

The council lists the following locations:

  • Marine Hall Danfo toilets in Fleetwood
  • Knott End Ferry Danfo toilets
  • Garstang High Street Car Park Danfo toilets
  • North Promenade toilets in Cleveleys
  • Wyre Estuary Country Park Danfo toilets

The network builds on earlier installations. The first fountain was installed at Marine Hall in Fleetwood in 2025, and a further fountain was added at Knott End Ferry earlier in 2026 after the council secured another round of funding. Wyre Council says it has purchased and installed three additional fountains at the other listed sites.

How the scheme could help local communities

Providing convenient refill points can make it easier for people to carry reusable bottles while walking, cycling, visiting parks or spending time by the coast. The council says the main environmental aim is to reduce single-use plastic waste, helping limit litter in public spaces and along the coastline.

Plastic litter can affect wildlife and sensitive habitats. While refill fountains are only one part of the response to waste, they give residents and visitors a practical alternative to buying bottled water when they are out and about.

Support for outdoor activity and warmer weather

The council also says the fountains can help people stay hydrated while using local walking and cycling routes, visiting Wyre Estuary Country Park or enjoying the promenades at Fleetwood and Cleveleys. Convenient access to drinking water may also benefit council staff and volunteers who work outdoors, particularly during warmer periods.

The facilities are intended for residents and visitors, and the council says people can bring reusable bottles. It also notes that four-legged companions can benefit when owners bring a suitable bowl.

Check signage at the refill points

Wyre Council has advised that signage is still being installed and may not yet be visible at every location. Most fountains are situated on Danfo toilet buildings, so they may not be immediately obvious from a distance.

Visitors should allow a little time to locate the refill point when they arrive and should follow any instructions displayed at the facility.

A small change with a practical purpose

The new fountains combine a local convenience with an environmental goal: making it easier to refill rather than discard and replace plastic bottles. Their impact will depend on how often people use them and whether the facilities remain accessible and well maintained.

For anyone planning a walk, cycle ride or visit to the coast in Wyre, carrying a reusable bottle is a simple way to make use of the new network and reduce avoidable waste.
